THE POWER OF A TRANSFORMED MIND

THE POWER OF A TRANSFORMED MIND

If you were to take a moment and someone were to ask you to describe your life right now with the imagery of weather, would weather would you use to describe it? How would you express it? Dark and gloomy? Bright skies? Cloudy with a chance of rain? Or crazier… with a chance of meatballs?

In today’s culture, the weather of many peoples lives may be heavier and gloomier than we think. Some of the weather people are experiencing translates into stuff like:

  • Nearly 25% of adults in the U.S. suffer from a diagnosable mental illness — with half of the entire US population projected to experience something in the mental health arena within our lifetime.
  • Half of U.S. 18–35-year-olds (49%) expressed anxiety over important decisions and were afraid to fail.
  • Over 3 in 10 (39%) said they often felt sad or depressed — 34% said they often felt lonely and isolated from others
  • 60-80% of adult males and 40-50% of adult females use pornography regularly
  • 24% of the U.S. (not just adults) meet the criteria for an alcohol use disorder
  • Nearly 10% of the population abuse prescription medications
  • 130 people per day commit suicide — translating to 1 every 11 minutes (which by the way, is a 35% increase since 1999!!)
  • 1 in 6 couples struggle with infertility, 1 in 6 miscarry — many of those couples never adequately grieve or thoroughly discuss those very real losses.
  • Over 40% of marriages right now end in divorce
  • 24 people per minute are victims of domestic violence by an intimate partner — In 22% of those cases (5-6 cases), children were witnesses
  • And in 2020 – nearly 600,000 Americans were homeless. The majority which have several mental health concerns.

Jesus promised that in this life we would have trouble, but that “In me you may have peace. In the world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

In other words, every believer is either an overcomer or they are overcome. We were born into a fight, but we were also born for a fight! The good news of Jesus is that because of His victory over death and our union with Him, we have victory over the darkness, the difficulty, and the desolation.

Paul tells us  in Romans 8:37 that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” And that that word there for more than conquerors is hypernukōmen, and it means “to keep on being conquerors to a greater degree”. Paul then tells us what our battle is against in verses 38-39: “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

There is a very real battle waging for our hearts and minds. More often than not, the thing that holds us back, keeps us trapped, and causes us to doubt is our minds.

WHAT IS A TRANSFORMED MIND?

Paul tells us in Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Then, in Ephesians 4:22-24, he tells us what the outlook of a transformed life looks like: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

When we take on the “new self”, we are not simply changing our minds, we are redefining our citizenship as a child of God and aligning ourselves to the Kingdom of God as a “new creation”.

The outlook of a transformed mind puts off the old self and is made new in the attitude of our minds that we can then put on the new self.
Then he clarifies what the attitude of a transformed mind thinks about in Colossians 3:1-2: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is — seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”

The biggest prison in the world isn’t a physical location… It’s the mind! And if we want to see transformation in our life, a great place to start is with your mind. Otherwise, like so many in this day and age, we will remain stuck in our minds.

We can’t transform our lives, but we can change our minds! And if we’ll change our minds, God can transform our lives!

8 SIGNS OF A TRANSFORMED MIND

It can be easy to talk about transformation and having a transformed mind. It can be harder to discern what it is like or what it looks like to actually live that out. Wherever you’re at in your transformation journey, I want to share with you 8 signs of a transformed mind.

Think of the following list as a personal “check-in”. Print out this list or download a PDF copy here and consider hanging it up somewhere you can review or having them in an easy to access place. This week, take one of these areas that you want to work on with the Holy Spirit this week.

Remember, YOU can’t transform your life, but you can change your mind! And if you’ll change your mind, GOD will transform your life!

1. YOU LIVE IN HOPE

Any thought in your mind that doesn’t inspire or produce hope is under the influence of a lie. The litmus test for truth is God’s Word. So anything that isn’t founded in God’s Word or that produces hope because of God’s word, is under the influence or rooted in a lie. Let this be a filter for your mind.

2. YOU LIVE IN HARMONY AND PEACE WITH OTHERS.

Paul tied the bow on this one for us in Romans 12:16-18 when he urges us to: “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

3. YOUR INNER DIALOGUE IS POSITIVE AND OPERATES WITH THAT OUTLOOK.

The narrative you tell yourself impacts the life that you live. A sound mind is a sober mind. It demonstrates that our lives are under control and we’re not running aimlessly, but rather with a purpose in mind! Timothy tells us: “God gave us a SPIRIT not of fear but of power and love and a sound mind.” (‭‭2 Tim. ‭1‬:‭7‬). Does our dialogue and how we operate reveal that the peace of Christ rules our hearts?

4. YOU LIKE YOURSELF AND ARE CONFIDENT IN WHO YOU ARE.

Our self-esteem flows from what we actually believe about ourselves, which then reflects what we think of God. If we are not confident in our identity in Christ, we will struggle to live out our identity in Christ!

5. YOU LIVE OUT OF WHAT IS TRUE, NOT JUST WHAT FEELS TRUE.

What you know trumps how you feel. Therefore, we will struggle to renew our minds if we allow what we know to be dictated solely by what we feel. Our feelings are great servants, but terrible masters. Our minds will remain a mess unless we choose to think God’s thoughts here on Earth as it is in Heaven.

6. YOUR LIFE IS CHARACTERIZED BY JOY.

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Rom. 14:17). In other words, a heart that is yielded to God lives for an audience of One. The hope of Jesus for you characterizes the Spirit-filled life within you. Are you known for your joy?

7. YOU ARE QUICK TO FORGIVE, EXTENDING GRACE AND MERCY TO OTHERS.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that we forget; but it does mean that we release ourselves from the bondage of the past and the plausibilities of the “what if’s”. Extending mercy to others means “They DON’T get what they deserve.”; extending grace means, “They get what they DON’T deserve.” How powerful!

8. YOU LIVE LIKE A VICTOR, NOT LIKE A VICTIM.

There is a fight for our soul. And more often than not, the battle for our lives is won or lost in our minds. Remember “He who is in us is GREATER than he who is in the world” (1 Jn. 4:4). Therefore, in Christ, we have power against the enemy to demolish strongholds, arguments, and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God by taking “captive every thought and making it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5).
